Like Leroy says above,
get the 57 away from the center.
Bass freq's. live near the cone edge.
Go up close too, proximity effect also rules low-end.

And like my brother duende says, move that mic around with phones on, listening for the sweet spot, and add a room mic in phase wherever it sounds nice to you in the room, since it should pick up the sound impression your ears are hearing up there, blend that to taste (or not, you may not like the room sound) ... experimentation is key.

A good mic-pre opens the sound up immensely.

I'm thinking a tube pre might be better. Plus, its gotta be able to run XLR out into the Tascam.

Tube-pre is generally no improvement
unless you are willing to spend serious money.
Just about all tube-pre's are a joke as far as
what the tube actually does in the circuit.
XLR out is the same as 1/4" out.
"Balanced" output is the key.

So say I get the M-Audio pre, if I run its 1/4" outs into my Tascam how should I set the Tascam gain wise? As low as possible on the knob or maybe at noonish? I'm not sure when it starts to add gain and when it takes away.

What are you recording onto?
Is the Tascam the recording unit or just a board (or both)?

If it's the latter, then does it have a solo button (for the input channel) and LED metering?

No its a usb interface that goes into Cubase.

OK cool ... so then does the Tascam have a solo button (for the input channel) and LED metering?

If so, it's very easy to get optimum, clean levels.

you need to bring out the low mids and a 2x15 won't do that. try recording with a 1x12, you'll be amazed.
