Terry Kath (hairy or not?) and Bogen amps

Post by Bert Ohlsson »

I use to like Terry Kath very much! But was he a real hairy stompbox guy or not, as Chicago's guitarist (and leader?) for the first (best) nine years?

He said he first used a bass tone pedal(?) that ”had it's own distortion”, before getting his first Cry Baby, which he said ”breaks up a lot”, though. ”They are all too distorted, none of them seem to get a good natural sound."
Maybe his tone wasn't that hairy, with some exceptions. His Free Form Guitar on the first album CTA is much into natural overdrive and feedback, isn't it?

Some say he plugged his Les Paul, SG, Strat or Tele into a Bogen PA head with Fender Dual Showman Bottoms (2x15). And some say he had a 60W Allied Electronics Knight amp or a Knight Heathkit Tube Amplifier, 35 watts, that went into a custom made speaker cabinet with six 10-inch speakers.
Some say he used an Italian-made Binson echo and a Maestro phase shifter, a Cry Baby wah wah and sometimes a Fuzz Face on the floor. (Very similar to Hendrix).
It's said that he added more pedals on his last albums (he died 1978) with flangers or Maestro Phase Shifter and Leslie rotating speaker (naturally or in a box?).
He was spokesman for Pignose and is also said to have used it as a soft pre-amp...

Is that a preamp standing to the right of Terry's speaker?

Same preamp(?) to the left and another (?) bigger one standing to the right. Cry Baby up front, right?

Foot on Cry Baby and flanger(?) on this side - but what squary box is on the other side of the mic-stand?

So I'm wondering if it's a Maestro Phase Shifter up front, but I know it's a Binson echo behind Terry.

BOGEN AMPS
I had not heard of Bogen amps before and found some interesting vids. The first one, though, is without Bogan sound, with one of the guitarists in Slipknot showing all his gear in the basement, 4½ Marshall stacks, lots of Masco's and more than 20 Bogan's...
