1966 models compared... w/ sound files!

Post by SBlue »

I was planning on doing this for a while, but the lack of time would not let me do it.
Anyway, they are all recorded using a Tele(bridge pu only), into a D*A*M 1966(my favorite fuzz pedal, in case you don't know), and into a Hiwatt. They are four different 1966s pedals. One with OC75, one with SFT353, one with AC125 and one with Silicon transistors.
Each 1966 has a Normal and Super Bee sound file recorded, so you can have an idea of how different they sound in both modes.
Before you asked which one I like better... the OC75 shines with humbucker, and it does cut through the mix a little better than the others. The SFT353 sound it's best with a P90 guitar. The AC125 is great with a Strat. With a Tele I really like the Silicon, which sounds like it's trying to explode and kill everybody around.
Hope you like them!!!
PS:Some computers were craping out the sound files at Soundclick.com, mostly the ones with Vista. Please, don't ask me why... I'm a MAC user.

Listening now, you kick ass for doing this.
What was the recording set-up, like what mic?

Thanks man... I really appreciate.
I've used a SM57 and a Royer R121. Pres are a Chandler Germanium and a Neve 1066. Both at the same level, going to a Digi002. There is no eq, compression or anything on the guitar sound. Bass is through a Ezekiel direct into the Chandler Germanium.
Thanks again man.

The files are freaking out on my computer too.
I'm using XP.
Real bummer too 'cause I was totally looking fwd to hearing these.

But in any case, thx for doing such a thorough test.

No wonder your '66 clips sound so good. You lucky bastard, nice pre's man. Most clips of the '66 (including mine) sound thin and don't represent the true sound at all. This phenomenon happens with my 1966 and my London, only the opposite effect with my London as it sounds muddy instead of thin. Anyway, the 1966 is not the easiest pedal to record, well done.

EDIT:
And by the way, no file problems here...I'm on a MAC too.

That's right, you have a couple Chandlers, you lucky dog..

Sickle,
I only have one Chandler... but I still consider myself lucky for having it!!!

That is freakin sweet, Thanks Sblue!

jkranitz,
I wish I would've wrote something as cool as that riff. Also, the elegance and finesse which riff for Spirit in the sky is executed is unreal.

Cubba,
You're welcome... soundclick files work on only 2/3 computers we have at work.
I know a lot of people that are also having problems with soundclick files.

The mic pres really help, but you can get great sounds out of just the Digi mic pres. The key is getting the drums first, then set up the mics(seting them up well on the speaker)and recording as you go. Sometimes what sounds cool during a setup, won't sound good after is recorded and played back with the drums and bass. Try setting up the mic(or mics) very close to the grille cloth. Also, when recording didgital, you don't need to have the levels almost clipping(analog is the opposite!!!). If using more than one mic, make sure they're in phase with each other.
Then, crank that 1966 and that London fuzz and you'll be in heaven!!!

Thanks for doing this, the clips sound amazing. God, I really need a silicon '66 :bangs head: . Oh, and the files are working fine for me on XP.

Well the lo-fi samples work for me,
not the hi-fi.
When you click the hi-fi's they play but they oscillate downward in pitch.
Very bizarre because I have my own SC page, no problems.
:zombiehuh:
Well anyway, they even sound bad-ass on the lo-fi option!
