Drag n' Fly 2010 just arrived... awesome new colours!

Post by smogfalls »

Just got a brand spanking new Drag n' Fly from the lovely Joe at Vintage & Rare, haven't had a chance to try it out yet, but will be interesting to see how it compares with the older Fly. Will post some thoughts and clips asap.
Love the new graphics and colour scheme. Very classy... almost elegant :badteeth:

For now, here's a couple a' pictures of the Brothers in Arms...

Is that a new kind of finish? It looks satin? Very cool!

Yeah the finish is more textured than usual. On the box it's labeled as "Anodized Blue"... tis very nice.

Had a good jam with both Drag n' Flys earlier and will report back with my findings later on tonight.

Cheerio!

Anodized... like toneczar enclosures or Sonic Research Turbo tuner... My favorite kind because it is much more durable for velcro use!

anodizing isn't really a finish per say, it's an electro-chemical process that changes the aluminum or brass itself and
can have various colors of dye added to it though they do tend to fade over time. i'm guess that the blue anodize here isn't a true anodize?

So, after an hour or so jamming with these 2 pedals back to back, here are my considered thoughts...

(for the record, I'm gonna be refering to the older Drag n' Fly as "Shep" and will call the new one "Ronald")

The first thing I noticed was that Ronald is far quieter than Shep noise-wise. Shep can get noisey even at lower settings on the Attack knob where-as Ronald seemed almost silent up until he was at full tilt.
Also, Ronald is slightly smoother and more focused sounding than Shep... maybe also has a touch more in the mids.
Shep has slightly more volume to kick out it seems, on identical settings old Shep was a fair bit louder and has more low end punch but is less focused and tight than Ronald. Shep is also a touch spittier and raspy.

I was thinking that I might sell one of these after deciding which I prefer, but I genuinely love them both! They are different enough to warrant keeping both. I think I still favour old Shep ever so slightly... we've bonded alot over the past couple of months.

The way I use the Drag n' Fly may be different to how others use theirs. I run mine into a cranked Marshall that is already a bit gritty and angry, and set the Drag n' Fly with Attack and Filter 2 o'clock, and Level at 3 o'clock. This sound is proper tasty... I can't put into words just how good this sounds, but let me just say that the Drag n' Fly is my favourite fuzz of all time and has been for 2 months now.

Will hopefully be posting some clips of me using it at our Rehearsals for the France/Belgium tour.

Cheers,
Xan :)

P.S: Great work Linzi... wish I had your soldering/organisation skills!!!

P.P.S: Great work Dave!.... this fuzz is truly unique and has won me over 100%
