Rangemaster Appreciation Post

Post by Dr Tony Balls »

god DAMN do I love these things. Be they Red Roosters, Beano Boosts, originals, or whatever they are just incredible little circuits that when paired with the right amp just make it open up and let the heavens pour on through. I've been using my humble 'Ballsmaster' version and its slowly replacing all of my fuzzes and dirt boxes as my favorite go-to box. Im now using one with both of my bands. For one i'm using it with a tele and a plexi, set all the way to a bass-heavy boost for thick thick thick fuzzy drive, and for the other im using it with a 335 and a plexi at a more full-range boost setting for more straight ahead overdriven tube tones. These stupid things do it all!

I love my Red Rooster. I use it most out of anything I bought last year.

Amen! The first pedal I ever built was a Red Rooster clone with a CV7112. It has a permanent spot on my board. With all the fuzzes I have, I find myself always turning to the combo of a DOD 250 into the rooster. It's really a special combination with my Sunn. Had never heard anything quite like it and can't believe how awesome it is.

I like the rangemaster circuit too but it really does need the amp to be pretty cookin for it to do its thing and i find im always getting asked to turn down (maybe its the type of music i do...maybe its cause in reality i suck...lol) so i dont find it to be the worlds most useful pedal...having said that in the right situation...like humbuckers into a vox style amp, there really is nothing better than a rangemaster! Its one of the most classic sounds imagineable.
