Re: D*A*M 1965 & Jerms MKI comparison
hey dave thanks for the great review.... those were my exact impression too against my D*A*M 65!
as for the transistors... my whole idea was to make as accurate a replica as possible.... i wanted to have people look at the guts and think they bought a real MKI (minus the folded case ).... i really wasn't trying to make a bunch of $ either (which i really didn't at $300 each, i guess i did slightly better than break even) .... it was a challenge to myself really.
i've got some good news, some bad news and some sort of bad news..... good news is i just scored enough real texas instruments 2G381's to make 5- 10 more of these ( i have yet to get and test them..... and it's unfortunately not enough to satisfy the demand, so i'm not sure how to get these out to people in a fair way. i'll figure that out later.) bad news is with the price i've paid for said trannies i have to increase the price to $400 each (sorry guys ) and the sort of bad news is theres no way to get any of these made and into peoples hands till december.
there you have it ... i'll keep you all posted!

Not to derail your thread, but here's my 2cents:
i do hear some differences...in my '65 & Jerms (at least)
not that one is better than the other, just different.
'65 is well balanced, stable; it's thee pro, gold standard version. more compression...balanced. Tuned to perfection!!
....Jerms is wild, loose, "open" and unchained, (and crispy/crackly - in a very good way!!),
tad noisier too...but that comes w the territory.
'65 is a shade darker, imo. relatively refined, undistilled Mk1 fuzzy goodness.
Think "Evil Hearted You" or "Over Under Sideways Down". That's IT for me.
...Jerms gets that "Hold Tight" opening note where it just rings out
and starts to feed back on itself in harmonics. (Dave Dee & Co.)
i guess the '65 seems more Yardbirdsy, Jerms is downtown Ronsonville...
Both keepers...
cheers to Dave & Jim....Holy Rollers!
Beautiful Dave, you always have such a way with words.
The differences are awfully subtle, but if you get down to it, they do exist.
I wouldn't expect anything less from great gear.
But in the end, they're awfully close or at least, equally magnificent.
Can't say that about the other 2 MKI's I've heard in person or a slew of others heard on the web.
What gets me is all the tweaking,
just crank that bitch and be done with it! -- duende

Just caught this thread here (thanks for the link!) I am going to take a break from writing and give this a look-see!

Cool vid. Both sound like extremely good MK1's . Great work Jim!
More refined and usable than the real thing, me thinks.

The differences are subtle, for sure.
it's kind of like when you first hear a collection of Robert Johnson songs.
At first you think, well these all kind of sound the same...
then later, you think...was i crazy?! each of these songs is a universe unto itself!
(ok, a bit of exaggeration there, but it is kind of amazing how he mastered so many different
blues styles at such a young age)
having had the 1965 for over 3 years, i know it pretty well.
Jerms' mk1 kind of fills in the gaps, so in my opinion Jim hit it out of the park for sure.
Especially since he used NOS original Mk1 parts!
I understand Donovan's point and Jim's original motivation. Both have merit.
Btw who bought that Black Cat Mk1? I'd kind of like to hear that one...
IIRC it was the "All American" version Mk1 (Zoso caps etc)
i say this with all due rspect, the jerms is like '65's slutty sister!
