D*A*M/Sola Sound Tone Bender MKIV (ESOTGB)

Post by The Captain »

Seriously now, this is the coolest looking MKIV thus far, right!?!? ...yeah, yeah, yeah I said that when we did the yellow ones....and then again when we did the orange ones....and then again when we did the green ones. Cool new project 5.7!! The Evil Son of the Green Bastard. The Black Sunday edition. A lean mean fighting machine sporting not only the legendary green jacket Mullard OC82D but also the highly prized blue jacket Mullard OC45. How special is that? Very.

A similar component approach as with the SOTGB. Carbon composition resistors, polystyrene and polypropylene capacitors in the audio path - how can something giving off a 2001 black monolith vibe fail to to be awesome?
Tuned around one of my favourite Park MKIV's so expect healthy lower midrange projection with a more open less nasal bark in the higher registers. The transistor selection adds to the open characteristics of the fuzz tone with the OC45 delivering a very sensitive reaction to pick attack and yielding most excellent amplifier interaction qualities - a slightly driven amplifier tone with MKIV's is your friend. Not quite a stout as the SOTGB in the lower registers and slightly boosted in the overall output level making for a Tone Bender circuit that projects extremely well even in a bass dominant band mix. The general flavour is most definitely of a 1970's vintage but with sonic qualities that certainly matches the somewhat its sinister appearance. It's a MKIV on an assassination mission.

There are 50 pieces in the project in total (numbered #000 - #049) with all units being assembled by Daniel Lee Tunstill. All set-up procedures, transistor selection, final testing and inspection are carried out by myself.

Ooooh 2 green jacket OC82Ds and a blue jacket OC45 is a great combination that's what my FS-77 Fuzz Sound has in it :drool2:

Had a play with mine side by side with the sotgb. Didn’t have a thorough comparison as I got called away from playing. Setup - Jazzmaster into Morgan amp just breaking up. Set both to halfway on tone, compensated for the slightly higher volume on the evil son, and worked from low to high gain. First impressions are that the evil one has a fuller sound across the range compared to the sotgb. Tad more volume and gain, though it’s difficult to tell the gain difference when both are raging. What I did notice was the prominent swirling harmonics on the evil Son, plus the reduced bass, which really worked better with the dark rhythm circuit on the jazzer. Both are cracking mkiv’s, but the evil Son is defo my fav.
