The Grease Box, what the fuck is it?

Fuzz tones for the musically outrageous and mentally overdriven.

Yeah I know... just thought it was an interesting geeky tidbit for those not keeping score and was just wondering aloud. Didn't think it would be the same... hence the "little brother" reference.

You can use the same trannys over and over and get a different tone. How the Grease Box is biased plays a significant role, much as it did in the Savage Henry, which while based on the Meathead sounds nothing like it at all.

Doesn't sound very little to me.

Its pretty interesting how you can get buzzy fuzz and heavy distortion just based on how you bias a circuit. I can't by any means 'read' the circuit and compare how close the Greaser is to an MK III, but doesn't look too different to me, savvy? To be able to design something that close to something else and still sound unique to me puts the Engineer's slide rule aside in favor of the Artist's brush..
which is why the grease box is soo cool imho:

it fits in the the "progression" of tone bender circuits (and therefor kinda is the "little brother" the the fuzzsound, if you can bare to think of each mk tonebender being a "little brother" to the last; related but different.) but with the artistic "what if vision" and sound crafting, if you excuse the phrase, playing an important part...

Hehe... I'm in agreement with you all the way, D. Maybe "little" was a poor word choice. Wasn't really referring to the sound output. Nothing "little" about a sound reference to Diamond Head. I was kinda referring to the lack of "Treble N Bass" functionality that the FuzzSound enjoys. But then again... It's not a FuzzSound. It's its own thang that I'm sure whatever it does can get pretty monsterous. But yeah... I agree that Dave is King at tweaking to create something unique in its own right.

Along these lines ... the best pedals have a great sound at their core.
A little knob adjustment one way or the other, whether that be a tone knob or the interplay between vol/gain knobs,
should only seek to fine tune what is already a killer sound.
This is why tweaker drive pedals don't always give up the HQ goods.
They are trying to be too much to too many people.
Of course there's exceptions, but those are uber-engineered to compensate.

Every one of Dave's pedals I've tried have the simplest controls, yet yield the sweetest, purest tones.
This is what you want when you buy a pedal.
What gets me is all the tweaking,
just crank that bitch and be done with it! -- duende
