Congrats on adding another early Arbiter Fuzz Face to your collection. Just curious, how are you able to determine that the one you just acquired is earlier than your other gray one? Pot codes? :hmm:

Thanks, a bunch of photos and some guidance from experts :hihi:
BTW pot codes are the same (6 - 9).

If you don't mind sharing your opinion please help me date this early Arbiter NKT 275 grey Fuzz Face and it's lineage in relation to your other similar FFs:

Can only guess, but it looks like it is almost identical to the first one Ive posted.
So anywhere between 66 and 68 :coffee:

Electric Warrior here you go .

Don't know if I should start a separate thread. Here is some data/test/voltages of some original fuzz face's I have taken apart . Also a couple new ones . Plus a Jen tone bender. I used just the r.j. keen transistor tester I built a long time ago from radio shack carbon film(5%) resistors and breadboard. I have a lot more info but need to find the papers I wrote everything on . So I will add more when I find it. Here is some I found off hand.

1966 Arbiter England Fuzz Face Transistor gains (will post soon have to find the paper I wrote it on for this one). This one sounded nice . I think roughly it was q1 hfe 44 and q2 68 .

Q1 C .66 Q2 C 4.76
B .10 B .61
E.0 E .51

(#2)
Different 1966 Arbiter England Fuzz Face . Just the original nkt275 transistors tested that I can find. Battery in Keen tester at 9.15v
This one not really a good sounding one . Q1 NHFE .68 /HFE 36 / LK .320 and Q2 NHFE 1.42/ hfe73/ LK .690

(#3)
Another 1966 Arbiter Fuzz face however Analogman mod'd this one before I got it. White dot nkt275's. Low gain with very low leakage compared to the original red dot nkt275s.

Collect readings with a 9.93 volt battery in the fuzz face.

Q1 C= .90 Q2 C= 4.87
B= .13 B= .90
E=0 E=.76

Transistors hfe . Keen tester battery at 9.13 volts. Q1 NHFE .56/ LK = .059 / HFE 50 HFE and Q2 NHFE = .68 / LK = .068 / HFE 61.2

(#4)
1968 Arbiter England fuzz face nkt275. Not a good one lol. Batt voltage in pedal 10.16 V

Q1 C=.35 Q2 c= ? Transistors keen tester battery at 9.15 volts Q1 HFE 75.3/NHFE 1.45/ LK 697 Q2 HFE 71/NHFE 1.31/lk .600
b=.08 b=.35
e= 0 e=.27

(#5)
Jen Tone Bender Italian 1967 or late 60's I believe. Sounded incredible ,cleaned up really nice ,really harmonically rich lol and played awesome. Stable pedal also

Transistors. keen tester battery at 9.10 volts

Q1 SFT 337 = NFFE .92 / LK .166 / HFE 75.4

Q2 SFT 363E = NHFE .74/ LK .379 /HFE 36.6

Collector reading with battery in pedal at 9.35 volts.

Q1 c= 0 Q2 c= 5.66 (i notice on Germanium that on Q2 if the b and e are like this they tend to sound really good .89-.81 )
b=.12 b=.89 just the spread of those number by .9 tend to sound great. Ge ff it wound be a lower number but still a difference
e = .90 E= .81 of .9)

1kA Attack control = 1.33k
50KA level control = 61.4k

25uf 30 V = 36.55uf .89 ohm lk
.0033uf = ?
.220nf = .208 nf

820r =831r
1k = .99k
8.2k = 8.13k
? = 10.24 k
? = 47.2 k

(#6)
1968 Dallas Arbiter England bc183l fuzz face. Really nice sounding one and you could crank fuzz knob with out any weirdness. Battery in pedal at 9.50 v . For some reason it was really hard for me to replicate this one ?

Q1 B=.56 Q2 E = .64
C =1.23 C= 3.41
E= 0 b =1.23

Pots , 1k lin = .90/.91 and 470k lin = 733k

Caps 2.2uf =2.15uf and 25uf = 26uf

Resistors
100k = 102.2k
330r =333r
33k = 33.8
8.2k =8.30

Transistors bc183l hfe's with battery in keen tester at 9.12 v

Q1 490
Q2 416

(#7)
1969 Dallas Arbiter Fuzz Face bc108c. Great sounding one.

Battery in pedal at 9.52 v

Q1 b=.56 Q2 e= .63
c=1.22 c= 3.83
E= 0 b=1.22

Pots 1k lin = .98k and 470k lin =488k

8.2k = 8.63k
33k = 35.8k
330r = 393r (406r in circuit)
100k = 108.9k

Caps 2.5uf = 3.68uf 22uf= 27.56 .01uf = .01uf

TFK bc108c hfs with keen tester battery at 9.13v

Q1 472
Q2 414

(#8)
1972 Dallas Arbiter Fuzz Face TFK bc108c . My favorite fuzz face I have ever had. Sounded like the best germanium I never had lol. Could max the fuzz knob with no weirdness also.

Battery in pedal at 9.53 v

Q1 b= .56 Q2 e=.65
c=1.25 c=3.82
e= o b= 1.25

TFK bc108c transistor battery in keen tester at 9.12v

Q1 384 and Q2 464

8.2k = 8.34k
33k = 34.2
330r = 441r
100k = 103.9k

2.2uf = 2.21uf and 20uf =20.02 uf .01uf = .008 uf

1k lin = .98
470k lin = 693 k

Thats it for now and hope if that makes any sense to anyone out there. On a real early arbiter before I started testing everything in these , it had a bias of q2 5.60. That one had a overdrive sound and was real stable . Also on the silicon one here the collector reading 's would change slightly when backing off of the fuzz knob from 100% full up to say 80% full up. The bias on q2 go's raises a bit when backed off a bit on these here .
