Maestro FZ-1 Fuzz-Tone (PAF)

Post by DiscoFreq »

My oldest fuzz (but I think my Framus tremolo pedal could be older) just arrived:

So how does it sound? I find that humbuckers are necessary to really kick it and be really fun. That pedal should rock!

Well I've got Dans (Fuzztone's) old FZ-1 ~ no 379 ~ considered myself very lucky to get such an early one ~ I've a load of good pics that I'll dig out if needed (might have already posted them before) and until last week it was simply great - not the balls of the FZ1-A, but you'd expect that! Unfortunately mine has gone to sleep (temporarily I'm sure - she's very old but has kept her looks!) but before that she was very spitty and loveable - somewhere I have a clip that Dan sent me - if its still "active" and I can dig it out then I'll put it up tomorrow (unless Dan reads this and can find it to post himself!) I happen to know that Stu has another in the 620's - he could make a much better comparison / description than me I'm sure

I'm bad at comparing or describing, but it sounds really nasty

I hope you can wake her up Graham :)

#292 was on eBay too:

amazing! Lovely thick screenprinting too, and the top of that switch is so clean it looks like it's only been used by bare feet - yum.
I'd love one of these, but will have to be satisifed with a clone unless I get extra lucky. I did score a batch of old Ge transistors the other day, including some 2N270s, so I'm all set! I'll probably substitute the first resistor for a trimpot so it'll go better with ye olde single coils.
Handmade, high-impact, great-looking radical queer germanium fuzz. A different approach to 1960s-inspired fuzz pedals, no clones, check them out at https://goodfuzzysounds.com or on YouTube https://tinyurl.com/GFS-YT

I wanted one for a long time (FZ-1A), but they're often rather expensive (even reissues).

For a PAF model I was prepared to bid more, but they sometimes went for $1000 or more (don't remember the serial number though). So the buyer of that #292 pedal did a very good deal... Maybe the crisis has an effect on the prices?

EXCELLENT ALL ORIGINAL CONDITION
NICE PEDAL UNMOLESTED
:hmm:

Well, not quite, there are a few replaced parts in there. Good cosmetically though, and still has the original knobs, unlike mine. I'll take some photos of mine later.

I didn't read that part

I was not sure about the caps, I should have compared some pictures but I was in a hurry. Sir_HC confirmed they were replaced, but I thought it was still interesting for that price...

Looks like 2 changed caps and a resistor,
but the cosmetics are really clean.
What gets me is all the tweaking,
