Re: Maestro FZ-1 Fuzz-Tone (PAF)
Happy 60th Birthday, Maestro Fuzz-Tone FZ-1!
Congrats on the score, JR
Thanks, Revis Hobbs & Glenn Snoddy, R.I.P.
Here be my first FZ-1…got it c.2004 for $123, (memorable number) — it was listed as an FZ-1A & “as-is/non-working/parts only” —typical battery glitch…fix’d!
Supreme thanks to the Honorable Captain David Main for pointing out to us here on the (old) D*A*M forum about the FZ-1 in ‘62 before the FZ-1A in ‘65. (it was probably pre-D*A*M forum days, actually). Before that, 96.69% of the population had no clue (including me & most on this forum). By now, everybody in the pedal world knows the ‘Origins of Fuzz’ history.
I sent this one (along w/the Vox MkII TB Professional for DAM R&D) to David on 23 March, 2005 to fix her up—it had an iffy input cable & we brainstormed the female shorty input idea & Dave did the work (hadn’t seen that done before) — I have a NOS grey cable I will eventually bring it back to stock condish, but current form is more user friendly & non-invasive.
Anyway, Cheers, Dave—wherever you is!

Re: Maestro FZ-1 Fuzz-Tone (PAF)
For me the FZ-1 is still the original + best, with the Mk1 on its tail in a photo-finish (and the inspiration for Good Fuzzy Sounds). I made an FZ-1 clone with 2N270s around 2008, after buying a couple of 1As (first one was only £50, sigh), and then a real one a year or two later, then another two (once since sold), and several more 1As! They are easy to add non-permanent mods to and always have lots of character!
Handmade, high-impact, great-looking radical queer germanium fuzz. A different approach to 1960s-inspired fuzz pedals, no clones, check them out at https://goodfuzzysounds.com or on YouTube https://tinyurl.com/GFS-YT
