The stuck at home set up of the day thread

Post by innerflight »

A lot of us are stuck in the house that means no gigging or practice rooms so what are we rocking at home? What makes for a good smaller amp, what fuzz works well at lower volumes? etc

Pictures and discussion are very welcome :tu:

These two were doing it for me yesterday.
With a Rat. Sounded good.
The 55 has a 6SJ7 which added more compression and sounded a little more congested regardless of its 10” rola.
The skylark 5T is rated around 4 watts. It’s still pretty loud mind.
This particular model also is part of a transition at the time when Gibson swapped over from 6V6GTA tubes to tubes which no-one in the guitar world would ever use in design again. Some really random choices.
This one in the power section has a ECL82. It looks like a EL84.
Because it hasn’t the girth of the contemporary standard Skylark ( non trem ) with its 6V6GTA I swapped out the 12AX7 with a GE black plate 5751 which is lower in gain but has more warmth and a fatter tone to my ear especially in this circuit.
It now doesn’t sound as thin at lower volumes as it did before.

Right now working with this prototype. Push-pull EF86 power section. Like a half watt at best.

Funny, like Doc, I was just using my 59 GA-5 Skylark with my 79 Rat. (tone knob) The guitar I picked was my 63 Les Paul Junior (SG) It sounded really good, although a tad dark at the apartment volume. I then swapped the Rat for my Castledine Rangemaster and that did the trick! :tu:

Damn - I should have tried stacking the Rat with the Rangemaster! I never remember to try two dirt pedals together....
Great deals with: Stu, Graham, Sickle, Devnulljp, SteveG, peps1, paine, fuzzface6669, jetofuj, sciencefriction, jerms, rafmax, Bigfoot2000, whiskeyfuneral, monolithfuzz.

I am currently using this set up cos I’m staying with my girlfriend and her daughter in a small flat until the UK lockdown is over. The Pigdog mini driver brings out the best of the Blues Jr with “fat” switch engaged at very low levels (master vol low and “volume” about half way, the Super Bee stacked into it with the Strat vol backed off to 8 sounds good too. I can run the amp clean with master all the way up and volume on 2 with no pedals too and it sounds pretty decent.
