Restored Marshall Supa MKII (Sola built)

Post by vanguard »

Early Supa Fuzz. Came to me with an incorrect filter cap, mounting screws, jacks, backplate, feet. On the hunt for correct jacks, but I'm satisfied otherwise. Last image is before resto

Installed correct cap
swapped jacks for better, though not original obviously, Rendar and Cliff
Replaced ground wire that goes from jack to jack. Fixed shoddy grounding
straightened mount, restored threading, and replaced screws
Black over red primer on bottom plate, then aged
new feet and screws, aged

Painted and aged plate. I just matched it to my 1.5's plate

Nice work! Shame that MG(?) removed what was likely an original piggybacked pair of power filter caps... Does the pedal squeal at all, at full blast?

Yeah, perhaps MG weren't familiar w/ the piggybacking happening in this era, and wanted it to look more original, ironically. Those Wimas are really stout. I still use them in builds without a worry.

It doesn't squeal at any setting. It's on the higher end of saturation. Only gates enough to keep idle noise about same as typical 1.5; i.e. it doesn't gate like some, with that crumbly attack to silence with no cleanup.

When playing chords beyond the power variety, it gets a really nice industrial growl. They all do it a bit, but it's more pronounced on this one.

That is a great question. The joints have been messed with, but I believe this was a common cap in that era. dont know if I've seen one with one red top Iskra and one of these though. The 10nF filter and 15nF out are interesting too--seems it's more often a matched pair.

Guess I better hunt around for the right Iskra then. I may have one in a corner somewhere. eBay was oddly low on these type caps last I checked.
