2 trannie/9V version of Sekova wedge fuzz (Data Dump)

The first Sekova chrome wedge is a faithful clone of the Maestro Fuzztone FZ1-A operating on a single AA battery - 1.5V. There is an eyelet board version and a pcb version of this one.

The next version has the same enclosure but an entirely different circuit (FA II) - seen here.

photos show - whole of interior (modified with an extra hole for input jack), close up of component side of pcb (numbered), and bottom of pcb (it was covered in tape, but adhesive was mostly dried up and it came away easily). Transistors are Matsushita 2SB173 - PNP Germanium. Diodes probably germanium. The white component is a polarised tantalum capacitor. This version seems to have been also been branded Apollo and Crestwood, in the same enclosure, sometimes painted black - see http://www.freestompboxes.org/viewtopic ... ova#p38121

A third version, with the same 2 transistors, with silicon diodes, a different pcb and different resisistor values exists - an Ebay seller sold off a batch of NOS units of this type this year (2008). Photos of Andy Carrell's one can be seen on the old forum in the post http://dam.10.forumer.com/viewtopic.php ... ght=sekova

Yay - thanks to AG at freestompboxes, above and beyond call of duty etc.
The component numbering on the schematic is different than on my image above, I'll redo it later.

Here's some photos of my two Sekova wedges.

Neither are the version 1 (Maestro FZ-1A copy)

Besides the differences in components, there are a few cosmetic differences.

One has knobs with a clear top with "V" labeled on both,
and the other has solid black plastic knobs with "V" and "T" labels...

I'm guessing the V/V one came first, i think the version 1's had the same knobs...

Sekova circuits..two different versions.
The top one came from the same guy who had a stash of these (where Andy got his from).

Simon, yours looks like a combination of components between these. :smashed:

Yours has the big barrel trannies (like the bottom one here) but with the blue
caps & white tantalum cap like the top one.
Plus yours has different Ge diodes (D1 & D2) than either of these!

the Sekova saga continues...

That´s the same circuit on a slightly modded pcb.
Replace the 27k resistors with 33k, the 5k6 resistors with 4k7 and the Ge-diodes with Si-diodes and you have got it.
I will draw a schematic with the different values later on.

What is written on the transistors of this unit ?

BTW, it has to be Version III and IV. :wink2:
The first version was the Fuzz-Tone clone wired inside like the FZ-1A.
The second version was the same (or similar) circuit with 3 transistors mounted on a pcb - Sir HC has one of them.

I've changed the thread title and some text in the first post...

So, do you guys know what this one is?
Sekova Fuzz
3x Matsushita 2SB175 Germanium PNP (?)
Is this the v1 FZ-1 circuit?

Thats v2 of the Sekova Fuzz. v1 was looking inside nearly identical to the Maestro FZ-1A as can be seen in the picture below. If and which changes were made in the v2 couldn´t be determined until now, your guts will be helpfull to achieve that.

I am suspecting that (at least) the Fuzz/Attack potentiometer could be configured like in the Mica Wailer, Fuzzder and other identical units sold under different brand names. BTW, the Mica Wailer and others are derived from the Amplifier Corporation of America (ACA) Fuzz King which used this Fuzz potentiometer configuration first.

An interesting thing is that there is a connection between Sekova and Shin-ei as can be seen on the footswitch of the second picture. There were also sold US-made units under the brand of Sekova as an example the Sekova Sweep (Phase Shifter) like Sir H C has one.
