oh yeah…i'll bet they were, Dave.
They do look darker than the usual grey, in the photo.
and it looks to be silver paint (the print FUZZ BOX etc) on the blue one sold today...

He said he last used it in the 70's-80's, so maybe he got it used in the 70's for 40-75 quid and figured it's at least worth 40, (not knowing if it's still functional). Perhaps someone that's totally out of the music gear scene and can't be bothered to research its' value…with no idea of its' rarity.
