Has anybody seen this Aerosmith news? Wonder what more there is to this story. He had a "minor injury" that stopped him from playing live last April. If I remember correctly he had a heart problem a few years back. Are they afraid he'd have a heart attack on the Grammy Stage mid-song? Have a Keith Moon Cow Palace episode...

Could be that they can't get adequate insurance for him to play due to underlying heath issues. I know it sounds whack as crack but at a certain point during your career development this becomes a real thing as a band gets bigger. Without adequate insurance for him the entity and or label/publishers etcetera leave themselves wide open to lawsuits like wrongful death lawsuits etcetera.
Sounds stupid and me personally I think it is a joke but hey, it's a thing.
MEH, you are right, insurance protects all the investors in the band and performances. Think about the losses incurred when Michael Jackson died just before his tour started.
