Copenhagen Recommendations?

Post by TheWarmth »

My girlfriend and I are organizing a trip to the UK and Europe. We're flying into London on March 7th and will only be in the UK for a few days. We were supposed to fly to Italy and spend the majority of our time there, but canceled that portion due to the coronavirus. So, we're now headed to Copenhagen on March 10 and are flying back to Chicago on the 16th. As such, I'm looking for suggestions for Copenhagen. Food, museums, guitar shops, record shops, etc. Let me know!

Copenhagen is very beautiful! I have a daughter living there.
I'll try to give some brief info, as a Swede(!), and hope some
real Danish guy could offer more in depth hints.

Central Copenhagen is within the yellow smaller circle with bigger museums, the beautiful Tivoli,
Central Station, the Castle etc. Many of the nicest places are situated by the water, within the orange
ellipse. Maybe you could take a boat ride one of the first days to get a better overview of the City...

As far as I understand there are two better music instrumental shops: KMC Music APS and
Vintageandrare.com - and maybe also Wood Sound and Woodstock Guitars.

There are a couple of record stores in the City, and especially:
Sound Station: https://soundstation.dk/ - and Goldmine Records: http://www.goldminerecords.dk/
- close to each other, and Danachord Records: https://www.danacordbutik.dk/ .

Maybe you could rent a car for a day or go with train for less than an hour, north by the Seaside,
to Scandinavia's largest and best Museum of Art - Louisiana: https://www.louisiana.dk/ - a
very beautiful place with nice restaurants (and a good view over to Sweden!) If you have a car you
then could continue north to Helsingör to have a look att Hamlet's Castle. And if you have time and the money,
you could take the ferry a short distance over to Helsingborg in Sweden. Then either return or turn southward
to the nice city of Malmö. Last you return to Copenhagen over the 4 miles long bridge - Öresundsbron -
completing your whole long day of cultural effort!
Have a good trip and a nice Copenhagen visit! :badteeth:

Thanks. This is very helpful. How is driving there? I have never driven in another country before, although I do have my international driver's permit.

I wouldn't say there is such a big difference! A little slower tempo and not so many highways. Roads marked with E means "Europe-roads", like E47 that starts in Helsingborg in Sweden, and goes over to Helsingör, down through Denmark to Lübeck i Germany, passing over two ferries on the way.

I don't know about US, but in Sweden we had a change of traffic rules in the cities, more than ten years ago, when pedestrians now have the right to cross the streets in front of cars that must stop - as long as there are transition signs though, and white markings in the street. But if there are green and red stop lights for the pedestrians the rule does not apply! Which often can be hard to distinguish for a driver in a hurry... And because of this rule many people nowadays walk right out in the street without looking out! I would assume this is the same in Denmark as in Sweden - and as in London!

By the way. Don't buy a car in Denmark! Just saying. They have absolutly sky high car taxes! If you absolutly have to buy a car - go over to Sweden, just north of Helsingborg, in Ängelholm. And I'm not talking of Volvo or an old Saab, but Koenigsegg! No big taxes, but of course still expensive...

If you read through one or two of these following links there shouldn't be any problem for you driving in Denmark!

Copenhagen's big Opera House, where I once watched Wagner's opera Parsifal. This bulding was given to the City by Maersk, the giant shipping firm. But it's terribly expensive for the city to keep and manage, and the politicians have talked about giving it back to Maersk! :hmm:

Nyhavn is a very nice place to visit. Many of the round tour boats start here.

And of course, Copenhagen is very well known, already from the 1940s, for it's very good bicycle culture! There are very good cycling lanes all through the city! And, on the contrary to Sweden, you can bring your bicycle for free on the trains!

This guy, filming 360! (you can turn it around!), passes Nyhavn and some channels in the winter!

I'd say Danish food culture is from tradition far better of than for example the corresponding Swedish
culture! Here are some nice examples in the Copenhagen area (even though I personally rather skip
raw meat and the like ).

Warmth! - Hope your flight over to London was all right!

I found this clip with some information that could be important,
concerning the pin number to your credit card (which is king here)
- in the beginning of the video!

The trip was great until about March 13th! Honestly, one of the best parts of the trip for me was visiting Macari's and scoring one of the Devil's Lettuce Tonebenders. Very lucky. We saw Supergrass in London at Alexandra Palace, which was fucking badass. Tons of great food in Denmark. We had tickets to see Big Thief in Copenhagen, but when we arrived at the venue, they were turning people away because the Danish PM has just announced a ban on gatherings of people over 100. Still no ticket refund!!!! We didn't get to go to any of the museums that we wanted to see. I did get excellent beer at Mikkeller at Warpigs. We rented a car and drove north to stay at Kokkedal Castle and then see Kronberg Castle. We were lucky to get back to Chicago safely, as our flight from CPH to O'Hare was only about 10% full.
