Paging vintage Fender guitar folks: your thoughts on an old JM?

Post by vanguard »

So I'm after a mid '60s JM in custom color w/ matching headstock. This one on Reverb looks amazing to me, but I know a ton of these were refin'd back in the day by sunburst owners w/ color envy. Any opinions on the originality of this candy apple red finish? The wear looks a bit odd to me, but I'm out of my depth. Now if it were a blonde Tele, I'd be much more useful . . .

I would be a bit concerned. The blue light pics are great but don't tell me much.
Regarding 50's fender there should be no paint stick mark however I'm not sure exactly when this finished. I.E: the neck cavity would be totally painted. Something for you to research is when this stopped.
Secondly, up to 63ish fender hammered nails into certain locations on the body. This was to ensure no damage was done to the paint when working on it. THE neck cavity was one (also acted as a hang nail hence no paint stick - date to be confirmed by your research). Also the neck pickup cavity and somewhere at the rear like say, trem route? I also note that there is an absence of a clear pic of the neck pickup cavity so I'd definitely be asking for a high definition photo of that area.
Notice the pics I have attached and circled where the nail holes are? Whilst not complete filled there is definitely paint that has bled into them. There should be clearly defined holes like you've just pulled a nail out because, well that's what they did.
The disclaimer: Everything I have said above is in relation to Stratocaster's. Probably because that is where the collector $$$ are however I see no logical reason why the same principles wouldn't apply to a Jazzy or Jag but, just sayin.
I'd be wanting more pics, and find out the date that they introduced the paint stick on Strat forums etc. My thoughts are it's probable that it's been refinished.

I have played/owned many vintage Jaguars and Jazzmasters. The neck to me seems over sprayed or refinished to some degree. Nice big ding too bass side.

Play wear on body is really crazy. Also looks like a bit melted on the lower treble bout? Love beat up CAR finishes, but this one I’d stay clear from.

As an owner of a red 63 Jazzmaster, this appears highly suspect. I am not a Fender expert by any stretch of the imagination, but, while this may be a great guitar, I really question this to be as represented,

just another observation of general fishiness from a non-expert - there is very little wear on the back of the neck, compared to the excessive/weirdly shaped wear in the 'fore-arm' area on the top and the big chunks out the end of the fretboard in the neck serial number pic...

I would call it a partscaster. There are some original parts, maybe the neck or some tuners but the rest of it looks pieced together.
