Don’t you need the ‘mother’ unit to get it to work? Or has it been modded to be a stand-alone thing already?

you're right - the box (pic at http://www.effectsdatabase.com/model/eurotec/blackbox) says they can be used separately, as well as with the Energiser. I probably would have tried one by now if I knew that! Good luck!
