Cover versions you like better than the originals

Post by HorseyBoy »

Thought this could be a good spot to post covers that, for one reason or another, you prefer to the original version.
First up, Ike and Tina Turner doing the Beatles' "Get Back". I'm completely obsessed with Ike's guitar playing at the moment - just dig the shit out of everything he does (and everything he doesn't). This is from "Workin' Together", my favourite Ike and Tina album, from 1971:

And here's a live version from 1972. I could watch Tina and the Ikettes dance all day:

Beatles covers were all the rage in the 70s (Ike and Tina did "Let it Be" on the same album). Junior Parker did THREE of them on his 1971 album "Love Ain't Nothin' but a Business Goin' On" - "Taxman", "Lady Madonna" and this one, "Tomorrow Never Knows":

Moving away from the Beatles and onto the Who, here's Oscar & the Majestics doing "I Can't Explain" in 1966. LOVE the fuzz on this one:

And the mighty Fleur de Lys (with Jimmy Page on lead guitar) doing "Circles" in the same year:

Anything the Melvins do by KISS. Their live version of Deuce was jaw dropping. Shame they never recorded it.

^ Nice choice! Dinosaur Jr did a cover of "Goin' Blind" for that "Kiss My Ass" tribute album, but J's voice is a little too mellow to suit the song.
I'm also a big fan of the Replacements' cover of "Black Diamond", but I still might like the original better:

Ike's an odd one in that time, he always seemed to like to play clean.

Yep, but he sure knew how to use the whammy bar on his Strat (the stuff he plays on the Otis Rush singles is wild). Funny thing is, he did like to overdrive his amp on a lot of his earlier, pre-Tina material. The guy was right there at the start of rock & roll.

Brilliant thread topic there, son.

I also approve of the Ike obsession.

Now I'm going to have to find something worthy to post here.

Until then, here's one of my favourite Ike cuts:
