Re: Impex loaded vintage
Dear Philip,
Good to hear from you. I hope you're keeping well given these most unique circumstances.
I think I can accommodate your request in due course.
Kind regards Nick.
P.S. do you still like amp sims?

Yeah, those silver 5uF Wimas are remnants of the earlier MKII's, incl. some of the 'narrow knobs' Supas in the earlier enclosure. It seems like they ran out and moved onto those lil' blue ones during this particular era of Impex MKII's.Doc Holliday wrote: ↑Tue Apr 07, 2020 7:33 pm Nick is yours an earlier model as it has those extra wima caps?

It looks like they bought a large stash of parts for MK1.5s. They ran out of parts first, of which the MKII required a larger number.
Everything is transitional.

I think they ran out of those silver Wima caps from the MK1.5-era very early on in the MKII production. The MK1.5's 5uF Wimas are in a slightly slimmer, longer cylinder, with slightly different print. I haven't looked through all of the data, but this seems extremely consistent among them, and so far I've only spotted those particular Wimas in one early MKII, which is Rafmax's 'narrow knobs' Supa (but there may be others).Electric Warrior wrote: ↑Tue Apr 07, 2020 8:37 pm It looks like they bought a large stash of parts for MK1.5s. You can compare the differences in the 'small board' MKII's, which have one of each type (and serves as even more evidence for them being "souped up" MK1.5's):
BTW, don't we have a chatroom for this sort of thing?

Re: Impex loaded vintage
Another one for the archives.
Recently acquired ca. 1967 Marshall Supa Fuzz, Impex loaded, or so I thought...
It had some issues when it first got here.
After plugging it in I soon found out that one of the transistors was only barely passing any signal but produced a lot of noise
Turned out to be Q1 with a gain of 7 and very high leakage.
In the process of tracking down the culprit, I flipped back Q2 and discovered a print trace on the can, turnes out its a Mullard OC81.
Just speculating here, but it does fit in with the theory that the Impex company might have been relabeling rejects from the Mullard production line.
The gain readings Dave once published years ago do seem like outliers, testing either very high or very low.
It's hard to find any reliable nformation on the Impex company (as a transistor manufacturer) but it sounds like a plausible theory to me.
