Absinthe recommendation?

Post by TheWarmth »

I think it was Sickle that posted an photo of a glass of absinthe recently somewhere here. I read that "real" absinthe has just become available in the US this year. I think the key ingredient that was previously illegal was wormwood and I know there are a lot of imitation brands that don't have it. Anyway, I'm looking for a brand recommendation for the real deal. The big liquor stores in Chicago are Sam's (not affiliated with Sam's Club) and Binny's. I'm pretty sure I can score some at either of those places.

Check this page out http://www.absinthe.se. There are tons of reviews of new Absinthes and even original vintage pre-ban Absinthes. They have a quick chart with ratings and links to reviews. Maybe you should print this list and bring to the store?

I'm going to try one of French ones myself, hopefully before the end of this year. These ones have caught my eye:
  • Jade Absinthe Edouard
    Jade PF 1901
    Jade Nouvelle-Orléans
    Doubs Mystique Carte d'Or
They have the Nouvelle-Orléans in stores in Sweden, but I'm probably going to order from here since they're cheaper and got a bigger sortiment: http://www.absintheonline.com

The original thread was on the old forum, Monolith Fuzz (now with added absinthe) I believe. Sickle wisely deleted all the stuff about absinthe when he transfered the thread over here. The fuzz should be the focal point, which btw, I'm looking forward to checking out in the near future. :-D The two schools of thought are on the old thread, Sickle & I do a bit of :catfight: making our points. My vote is for the Jade stuff. It can be ordered here & will be shipped to your door. http://www.absintheonline.com/acatalog/Jade.html Lucid is made by the same guy, is a lot cheeper, available in the US, but the review I read said it wasn't as good.

Hey Paul, I live right on the border of France, so if you need me to make a trek over and get some to send over, just let me know.

In the cold light of day after consuming too much absinthe I'm not sure that any recommendations are a good idea ! Never again springs to mind

Paul, I can go to the store today and see how much it costs, if you like. It may be cheaper in the US though because taxes are around 17.5% in Switzerland. Taxes are less in the EU zone; I was thinking if there was something that was impossible to find in the US I could make a run for you.

I went ahead and got the Kubler. It wound up being about $60. The dude at the store said that he'd heard it was good, but he had only tried one or two of the varieties they had. I'll have to report back after the weekend. Now I've gotta look for a good recipe. Think I'll just try to dilute it a bit with sugar and water and see how that goes.

I thought wormwood having a drug like effect was just a myth? Either way I'm picking up a bottle of absinthe for the weekend. Not too many types available here, so I'm gonna try one called "Absente" from France, which I doubt have high amounts of wormwood.
