1974 Gibson SG special restoration.
Going to post pics and updates here as I bring this neglected and badly refinished guitar back to life. Horrid red paint brushed on thick over 2 coats of primer, dreadful headstock veneer and screwed up electrics.

A pair of perfectly functioning Pat number mini humbuckers.
Veneer removed and horribly drilled plugged and and re drilled in the wrong place tuner holes drilled out again so I can plug properly.

Very cool project
Beautiful streamlined shape on this SG, interesting is it walnut or mahogany?
Early mini humbuckers are amazing!

Looks like a 1 piece mahogany body. I need to finish stripping and sanding to be sure though. The contours and horns are pretty well defined under all that paint.

A little more stripping and some careful sanding needed. There was a clear lacquer on the fretboard that was all sticky and turning brown. Can just see a little original finish around bridge holes. Looks like faded cherry red. Someone had put clear tape over the holes and then applied the paint over it. Same along the edge of the fretboard in places.
Glad to see there’s no sign of a reset neck or broken heel.

Stripped. Wood is stained a bit grey from the primer but it’ll sand out.
The serial number had been scratched into the paint over the original stamped one. Hopefully sanding will get rid of some of the scratching.

Maple plugs in and a few imperfections on the headstock repair filled with mahogany dust + wood glue based filler. Also re-glued a few block inlays that had come loose as I was taking the lacquer off the fretboard.
