How does this sort of thing even happen? There was no battery inside when it arrived, but maybe the seller fumbled about and banged the battery into it whilst wrenching it out?

Parcel did come in Royal Mail's 'sorry we fucked up' bag, but it still looked fine, despite being a little bit wet/muddy. This unit is actually missing its outer cover, but it was still double-boxed, and wrapped up inside. The hardwired cable was securely isolated from the guts, and there was nothing loose flailing about. The lead looks already pretty oxidised/corroded, so maybe some really sudden blunt force sustained by the parcel during transit was enough to cause it to break.

I think I had a similar thing happen to an STC transistor in a reverse board Mk-III.
Some very careful soldering should bring that thing back to life
