Hendrix certainly opened the door for electric guitar. IMO, he might be the first of the modern era, but I'm partial to Bo Diddley on that one. That guy was pretty experimental for his day.

Please tell me more about seeing Hendrix live!
I am going to see the tribute show in Chicago next weekend and had the honor to talk with Eddie Krammer at NAMM 2 years ago.
I like the White Stripes very much but at first I thought they were a local H rip off band ( this is not the case )
Over the years I think that as one of the mordern day guitar gods Jack White stands out head and shoulder above the rest.
However there can and will only be one Jimi Hendrix.

good discourse, guys! +1 on Mitch Mitchell. A quality drummer rates high with me,
and Mitch was one of thee finest...
Hey, speaking of Jimi & "fuzz"
(i posted this on the old forum, but it needs to be heard again)
....here's an early fuzz outing! (love how he does that signature Hendrix muted 6 string strum
that he did later on Are You Experienced? and Voodoo Chile?)
Btw, deffo sounds like a germanium FUZZrite...Nice drum break, too!
KILLER SHIT from '66! FREAK OUT!

Hornet's Nest by Curtis Knight & The Squires (1966)
"...."Hornet's Nest"/"Knock Yourself Out"
The very first record to feature Hendrix compositions.
These two instrumentals are credited to J. Hendrix/J. Simon (the producer of the sessions)
For the second single, Knight and PPX chose to release two excellent instrumentals written by Hendrix, "Hornets Nest"/"Knock Yourself Out" (with producer Jerry Simon also credited). Importantly, these are the first Hendrix compositions to appear on record ! "Hornets Nest" (inspired by the TV series "The Green Hornet") has a monster fuzzy (buzzing) guitar from Jimmy and some dramatic spookie organ. "Knock Yourself Out" is more interesting, with some strong driving rhythms and solos. Great drums too. At the same time as this session, Jimmy penned another instrumental with a similar feel to "Knock Yourself Out" called "No Such Animal". Because of contractual complications, the song has never appeared on the numerous posthume PPX albums (it did surface as a posthumous single on various labels and on the otherwise Lonnie Youngblood compilation "Cosmic Turnaround")...."

While I'm at it, here's the earliest Jimi on film. Shotgun!

Here's a live '65 version of I'm A Man. Hold out for the solo (2:10-ish)... WAY wild for '65!!
...possibly using an Echoplex??! listen to the end!!

Re: and this is why I love fuzz....Hendrix video
Does anyone know more about Eddie Kramer's recording methods? Should I start a separate post on the subject or would it be ok to discuss here? I heard he used a neumann U67 and a Beyer m160 exclusively on all of his guitarists. Now someone else told me he liked the SM57, but I've never heard him say that. Anyone know about this or how he would place them?

There's an interview in a book called 'Behind the glass' (Howard Massey) where he talks about it, if I recall correctly.Poorbob wrote:Does anyone know more about Eddie Kramer's recording methods? If it is not in there, it is in 'Console Confessions' (Anthony Savona). You might be able to find an extract or if you can't & there's interest I'll see whether I can dig it up myself. I'm afraid scanning would be a copyright infringement.

Regarding Eddie Kramer's recording style. Check out the video of him in Electric Ladyland. That might have some stuff. Also, he has been doing seminars across the country pushing the Waves stuff he is associated with.
