what are the differences between oc75 and oc81d

Post by druckpig »

hi, im new to this stuff and need some pointers please.
Ive read a little regarding this but would appreciate any insight based on peoples first hand experiences

is it true that the oc81d cleans up better than the oc75 or is it myth..
if its true what does the oc75 sound like when rolling the guitar volume back , what are the differences in general ?
thanks

From what I understand, the differences are slight. They are, however, different in that supposedly OC81D's clean up better and have different tonal characteristics. I haven't dealt with OC75's, so I can't really comment on the tonal characteristics, but I have heard that there are.

Welcome Pig!

The differences are negligable in my opinion (I might get shot down here by the OC81d Mullard Police!). I can tell the difference at high volume, but it is not worth loosing too much sleep over.
At gigging volume the maxed out gain of OC81's seem thicker (more chewy has been used to describe it).

Backing off on the guitars volume and I get good enough clean-up from both versions. When I say 'clean', its never totally clean (who wants crystal clean anyway!) and depends a lot on your set up.

Certainly OC81d's are rarer than OC75's etc, and they are nice things to have, but probably best left to collectors and the insane tone hound hunters (I really am gonna get shot down here eh! :hihi: ).

Are you on Dave's list for a 66 or MKII? If not, you should be. They are the king of fuzzes!

Don't let transistor types interfear wth the most important thing. Your playing! :headpop:

BTW, Interesting that they originally used 3 drivers rather than 1 driver and 2 OC81's...

Nice "Transistor Spec Sheet"!! :geek:

Tranny Data Porn!...for the uber fuzz geek perv!...:drools: heh heh... :ugeek:

(We've all gotta have Mullard OC58's in a few years.....in our custom D*A*M hearing aids!)

PS: Sickle, have you got another page that includes Mullard OC176's? Curious about the specs on those...
The only Red Rooster I've gotten to experience in person had one of those in it....(IIRC)

Not sure if the lists for 1966 or MKII's are still open....someone else here, should be
able to tell you...

For some reason I think not...but it's just a matter of time until they're open again...
(let the Captain catch up with things)

...i think you have a better chance at OC75's; the OC81D's are scarce i think...

Hey, Mr. Tentacles...I think the old Rooster i tried had an OC176.
It's kb892's....KB, you out there? Can you pop the hood on that old Rooster and check that tranny again?
